Visually guided eye growth in the squid
Eyes with refractive error have reduced visual acuity and are rarely found in the wild. Vertebrate eyes possess a visually guided emmetropisation process within the retina which detects the sign of defocus, and regulates eye growth to align the retina at the focal plane of the eye's optical components to avoid the development of refractive error, such as myopia, an increasing problem in humans....
متن کاملRefractoriness of PET mouse integument to the nerve growth factor
This paper deals with the refractoriness of PET \ mouse integument to the subcutaneous administration of nerve growth factor. Newborn mice were injected once daily with NGF through ten injections. Gross and histological examination showed that the skin of the experimental animals was completely unresponsive to this agent. No alterations in the hair growth cycle or pattern were ·observed.
متن کاملproficiency level and factors fostering reticence in efl learners
according to cheng (1999), in recent esl/efl literature, asian (especially east asian) learners of english as a foreign/second language have been arguably reported as reticent and passive learners. the most common allegations are that these students are reluctant to participate in classroom discourse; they are unwilling to give responses; they do not ask questions; and they are passive and over...

Although ATP has been shown to be an energy source for sodium extrusion in injected squid axons (CaldweU, Hodgkin, Keynes, and Shaw, 1960) as well as dialyzed axons (Brinley and Mullins, 1967; Mullins and Brinley, 1967), the ability of other high-energy phosphate compounds to support sodium extrusion has not been thoroughly studied. An internal dialysis technique has been used for such a study ...
متن کاملWater relations of tetrapod integument.
The vertebrate integument represents an evolutionary compromise between the needs for mechanical protection and those of sensing the environment and regulating the exchange of materials and energy. Fibrous keratins evolved as a means of strengthening the integument while simultaneously providing a structural support for lipids, which comprise the principal barrier to cutaneous water efflux in t...
